About the Course

Civil engineering is one of the broadest of the engineering disciplines, extending across many technical specialties. Civil engineers plan, design, and supervise the construction of facilities essential to modern life. These facilities vary widely in nature, size, and scope and include space satellites and launching facilities, offshore structures, bridges, buildings, tunnels, highways, transit systems, dams, airports, harbors, water supply system and wastewater treatment plants. A civil engineer is responsible for planning and designing a project, constructing the project to the required scale, and maintenance of the product. A civil engineer requires not only a high standard of engineering knowledge but also supervisory and administrative skills..
 
Career Prospects
Civil engineers are employed in all the major construction projects carried out by the state or central government the public works departments, the railways and military. Civil Engineers are mostly required in private construction and real estate companies as project engineers. Civil Engineers also employed in various industries to design the structures related to these industries. Those who are down to earth people may join various NGOs working in water shade management and other areas. Civil engineering graduates can also go in for research and take up teaching or they can open their own independent consultancy services. They also can join the lucrative Indian Engineering Services conducted by Union Public Service Commission.
 
Eligibility Criteria
10+2 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects; Chemistry, Biology, Bio-technology, Computer Science, are eligible to pursue B.Tech course.
 
Lateral Entry to Second Year
The minimum qualification for admission to 2nd year/ 3rd semester of the B.Tech degree courses is as under :
All those candidates who have passed the diploma in Engg. Technology in any branch (as per details available in Information Brochure of PTU) from any Institution of Punjab / other State and have Punjab Domicile with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate (for SC/ ST 40% )or equivalent grade point are eligible for admission to various disciplines of B.E. / B. Tech. course. Provided, however, if some seats remain vacant even after considering all the aforesaid candidates, then candidates from outside Punjab who have passed the diploma in any branch of Engineering/ Technology (as per details available in Information Brochure of PTU) from any other institution in the country, affiliated to any recognized Board with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate (for SC/ST 40% ) or equivalent grade point shall also be eligible for admission to various disciplines of B.E. / B. Tech. course provided diploma courses in Engineering & Technology have been approved by AICTE.
 
Admission Procedure
Admission for 66.6% seats is carried out by PTU on the basis of AIEEE while 33.3% seats in each discipline are reserved for Management Quota. Admission to all seats is made on the basis of merit
